An unexpected health emergency resulted in the 3 pm livestream being cancelled but "Incorporating Health Literacy into Speech Therapy" was presented by Jackie Rodriguez at 5 pm, and it was fantastic!

Jackie began by defining health literacy as the knowledge and information a person needs to make informed decisions about their health. She distinguished between personal health literacy (what a patient or caregiver understands or seeks out on their own, like Googling a diagnosis) and organizational health literacy (what clinicians share through handouts, verbal education, etc.) to make that understanding possible.

Her case examples and stats were eye-opening to say the least. It was apparent that Jackie's mission is to help SLPs understand that our role as clinicians is to treat disorders, not to compensate for systemic gaps.

She offered concrete, actionable strategies like adjusting assessment/treatment materials and language to match a client's health literacy level, using teach-back and plain-language explanations for high vs. low health-literacy audiences, considering dialect and language background when selecting materials, and so much more. This is a session we will rewatch (must be logged into your BIM account and registered to access)!

We are sending well wishes to Ezra and will share an update about their course when available.
